Advanced Part Layout (Step One one the Road to GCode)
The old part layout was fine.
It auto-generated packs of parts with pretty good success. You hit the button, waited a couple of seconds, and most of the time you got something usable. For a lot of projects that was enough.
Then we went down the true nesting rabbit hole.
Real nesting can be impressive when you have dozens of tiny, irregular parts and every square inch of material matters. In practice it was mixed at best and, more importantly, it was slow. We’re talking minutes to hours for a result that still needed manual cleanup. That’s dumb. A good pack that gets you 90% of the way there in about two seconds is far more useful for the way most of us actually work.
So we backtracked.
Advanced Layout
The new Advanced Layout keeps the fast auto-pack as the starting point, then gets out of your way so you can finish the job properly.
- Drag any part to any position on the sheet.
- Use the alignment tools to line up multiple parts cleanly.
- Grab the rotate tool and spin a part until it nests snugly inside an opening or against another part.
You’re in control. The computer does the heavy lifting of the initial packing; you do the final, intelligent placement that only a human eye (and a bit of shop sense) can do well.
Clearance That Actually Makes Sense
Default offsets are tuned to how you’ll cut:
- CNC — 2.5× the router bit radius. With a ¼″ bit that leaves roughly ⅛″ of material between parts so the whole sheet doesn’t turn into a house of cards the moment the last cut is made.
- Laser — enough gap that you don’t scorch neighboring parts while cutting the current one.
- Shop tools — respects your kerf so the parts still fit the way the design intends.
See Exactly What the Tool Will Do
Click any part (or group of parts) and the interface shows you the tool path clearance against everything around it. You can see the actual space the bit, beam, or blade needs. No more guessing. No more “I hope that 3 mm gap is enough.” It’s a fool-proof visual check that every part has room to breathe.
That matters more than it sounds. GCrafter already guarantees the design will assemble. The layout still has to guarantee the parts can be cut without drama.
Why This Matters (and What’s Coming)
Layouts had to become aware.
You can’t generate useful G-code if the system doesn’t know which part lives on which sheet, the thickness of that sheet, and the exact placement and orientation of every part. Advanced Layout is the foundation. It also puts the placeholders in place for phase two: toolpaths.
And toolpaths in the real world are messy.
Unless you’re a CAM genius, you don’t get everything perfect the first time. Depths, rough passes, finish passes, stock to leave, inside contours, outside contours, along-the-edge paths — you know the drill. Wood isn’t uniform. The final pass is a hair too shallow or a hair too deep. You stop the machine, tweak something, restart. Sometimes you only need to re-cut the outside contour because the inside is already done. Sometimes you need to disable an entire part, reset its paths, and come back to it later.
That’s the reality of actually making things.
So the system has to support the way work actually happens: enable or disable individual parts, or even just one contour on a part, reset paths cleanly, and keep going without fighting the software. I’ve been there enough times to know exactly what that frustration feels like. This is being built for that reality, not for the clean demo videos.
Fast pack. Human control. Visible clearance. And a layout that already knows what sheet everything is on so the next step — real, controllable toolpaths — can actually work the way the shop does.
